Member Privilege

Life happens. We’re here to help.

At times, life can be unpredictable and cause us to lose track of our expenses or account balances. Having a check or other payment returned due to insufficient funds can be costly and inconvenient. That’s why we provide Member Privilege, an overdraft service for Mid American Credit Union's accountholders.

What is Member Privilege?

Member Privilege is a discretionary, noncontractual overdraft service that may cover transactions when your available balance isn't enough, up to a set limit.

It may be used for:

  • Checks and teller withdrawals
  • ACH and automatic bill payments
  • Recurring debit card payments

For consumer accounts: With your consent (opt-in), we may also authorize ATM and one-time debit card transactions using your available balance and Member Privilege limit.

For non-consumer accounts: Access to the limit for ATM and one-time debit card transactions will be automatically available unless you opt out. (Varies by account type.)

How it works

Member Privilege is a discretionary service, not a guarantee. We may decline to cover an overdraft at any time—even if we’ve approved one in the past.

Your account may become overdrawn by:

  1. Checks, transfers, or withdrawals
  2. Authorized debit card transactions
  3. Returned deposited items
  4. Account fees
  5. Deposits not yet available per Funds Availability Policy

We may decline to pay an overdraft for reasons including, but not limited to:

  • Your account not meeting eligibility requirements
  • The transaction exceeding your assigned overdraft limit
  • You’ve opted out of coverage for certain transactions

Returned items may incur $30 NSF fees each time they are presented for payment.

If eligible, we may cover overdrafts as a courtesy—not a guarantee. You should bring your account to a positive balance as soon as possible and must do so within 30 calendar days.

If your account is not brought current within 30 days, your Member Privilege limit will be suspended, and additional items may be declined or returned. Coverage may be reinstated once your account is returned to good standing.

What does it cost?

There’s no fee unless you use the service. If you do use the overdraft limit:

  • You’ll be charged our Courtesy Pay Fee of $30 per overdraft item for checks, ACH payments, recurring debit card transactions, etc.
  • For consumer accounts: We do not cover ATM and one-time debit card transactions unless you opt in.
If you opt in, and a transaction posts with insufficient funds, you may be charged our Courtesy Pay Fee of $30 per item.

How to opt in or out

To add or remove coverage for ATM and one-time debit card transactions under Member Privilege, you can:

You can also remove Member Privilege entirely at any time. Note: You’re still responsible for any overdrawn balances or related fees.

What’s my limit?

Overdraft limits are assigned based on account type and differ between consumer and business accounts. After your account is open 30 days or more, your Member Privilege limit may become available. It will then be assessed and potentially adjusted monthly based on your account history and deposit activity. Business accounts will have a set limit of $750 after 30 or more days as long as the account is eligible.

If you have more than one account, all eligible accounts will be assigned a limit.

Are there other overdraft options?

Yes! We also offer:

  • Links to a savings or another checking account
  • Overdraft lines of credit

These may be more cost-effective than Member Privilege.
